Obituary

Amanda Diann Johnson, born Amanda Diann Thompson on March 3, 1957, in the sun-drenched town of Safford, Arizona, passed away peacefully in her beloved hometown on May 15, 2026. Throughout her 69 years, Amanda was a pillar of dedication and warmth, a beacon whose light touched the lives of all around her.

Her life’s journey was one marked by an unwavering commitment to care and compassion, embodied in her noble career as a nurse. Graduating from Pima Medical School in 1980 with her Licensed Practical Nurse credentials, Amanda entered the medical field not just as a profession but as a calling. Her hands healed and her heart comforted countless patients, making her the embodiment of selfless service.

Amanda was known to all who knew her as very hard-working, a trait that drove her both in her vocation and her cherished role within her family. Yet, beyond the bustle of her daily duties, she found solace and joy in the simple, intimate art of crocheting afghans — lovingly crafted treasures that have become treasured heirlooms, enveloping her family in warmth and memories.

Her proudest accomplishments were not confined to her professional achievements but found their purest expression in the flourishing family she nurtured: a devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. Amanda’s legacy lives vibrantly in her son, Danny Bodine; her daughters, Judy Rackley and Billie Bodine; and in her siblings Cindy Ratzlaff and Gary Thompson. Eleven grandchildren and seventeen great-grandchildren carry forward the light she so generously shared.

Amanda’s life was rooted in deep family bonds that withstood the passing of time and loss. She was preceded in death by her father, G.L. Thompson; her mother, Judy Campbell Thompson; and her brother, Ferrin Thompson. The echoes of their memories are held tenderly in her heart and the hearts of those she cherished.

In reflecting upon Amanda Diann Johnson’s remarkable life, one is drawn to the fullness of her spirit — a woman who embraced every role with grace, resilience, and love. Her home in Safford was more than the place of her birth and passing; it was the backdrop of a life lived richly and meaningfully.

Amanda’s story is woven deeply into the fabric of her community and family, her every stitch of care and effort a lasting testament to a life of purpose and heart. Her presence will be profoundly missed, but the warmth she created remains, an exquisite afghan knitted with love to comfort those who continue her journey.
