Carmello Herrera

d. May 22, 2025

Carmello H. Herrera, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully on May 22, 2025, in Duncan, Arizona. Born on June 10, 1951, in Safford, Arizona, Carmello was a man whose life was deeply rooted in love for his family and dedication to his work.

A proud graduate of Duncan High School, Carmello joined the U.S. Army in 1970, honoring his country until his discharge in 1977. After returning home, he embarked on a fulfilling career as a copper miner and served as a deputy sheriff in Greenlee County. Through his years of service, he was known for his unwavering commitment and integrity, standing as a protector of his community.

Carmello's down-to-earth personality shone through in everything he did. Describing him as a simple man would be an understatement; he found joy in the little things, always dreaming of spending time on his beloved ranch, tending to his land and riding on his tractor. His heart was rooted firmly in his family, and everyone who knew him can attest to his deep love for them.

He celebrated a wonderful life with his high school sweetheart, Candelaria Mejia, whom he married soon after graduation. Their bond was a testament to young love blossoming into a life filled with shared dreams and countless memories. Together, they raised a beautiful family, including their beloved daughter, Monica Yvette (Mark) Johnson, and son, Carmello M. (Jamie Shaw) Herrera.

Carmello found immense pleasure in spending time with his adored grandchildren, Mary-Candace (Chase Savage) and Mike Johnson (Connor Derscheid), and great-grandchildren, Lincoln and Milo Savage. Each moment spent with them brought him deep joy, encapsulating the legacy of love that he worked tirelessly to build.

He is survived by his wife of 55 years Candelaria, children Monica Yvette (Mark) Johnson & Carmello M. Herrera (Jamie Shaw), his siblings Jessie (Frank) Martinez & Mike Herrera, 2 grandchildren & 2 great-grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Miguel Subia and Monica Hinojos Herrera, along with his siblings Beatrice H., Jacinto H., Marie Paz, and his sister Margaret H. They will surely greet him with open arms in the afterlife.

Carmello’s legacy will be honored with a visitation on June 7, 2025, from 8:00 AM to 10:00 AM, followed by a Rosary from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, and a Mass at 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM. All services will take place at St. Mary's Catholic Mission Church in Duncan, Arizona.
