Clay West, born on April 12, 1983, in Safford, Arizona, passed away on August 14, 2024 in Mesa, Arizona, leaving behind a legacy marked by dedication, humor, and an indomitable spirit. He was a beloved son to Cheri K. Fulkerson and Wayne H. West, and a cherished sibling to Bethany K. West, Henry C. (Charlea Webb) West, Marquis McElhannon, and Brittany (Travis) Liby. He was a proud father to Patrick H. West, and his extended family included his nieces Lyra F. McElhannon, Amelia K. West, and Mayzie Liby, as well as nephews Atticus K. West, William F. McClain, Hendrix Liby, and Ozias Liby.
Clay's educational journey began at Miami High School, from which he graduated in 2001 as a Certified Welder. His extraordinary skills in welding were so well-regarded that his teacher allowed him to run the welding shop, guiding his classmates in the craft he loved. Following high school, Clay enlisted in the United States Air Force. He rose to attaining the rank of Master Sergeant (E-7) over his distinguished career of more than 22 years. He served his country in several deployments, including Operation Enduring Freedom in 2012 and Operation Inherent Resolve in both 2015 and 2019. In 2022, he contributed to Operation Spartan Shield. Over the years, Clay received numerous decorations, including the Meritorious Service Medal, the Air and Space Commendation Medal, the Air and Space Achievement Medal, AF Good Conduct Medal, Air Reserve Forces Meritorious Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and Nuclear Deterrence Operations Service Medal. His commitment and service were a significant contribution to his nation and state, and he will be greatly missed by his brothers and sister in arms.
Clay was known for his vibrant personality; as a child, he embraced his love for camouflage and enjoyed light-heartedly teasing his family, particularly calling his mother "old lady" just to see her reaction. A natural prankster, he often delighted in pulling pranks on relatives, creating a joyful atmosphere wherever he went. Even as an adult, he had a heart of gold and a hard shell but was soft in the middle, supporting friends and family with comforting words during difficult times, often reminding them, "you're all right."
His adventurous spirit led him to pursue hobbies such as barbequing and smoking meat, camping, fishing, and horseback riding. He treasured the time spent with friends and family, frequently hosting gatherings at his home. Clay was a man of strong will who faced adversity head-on; at just 13 years old, he suffered severe 3rd degree burns over 80% of his body from an accident but exhibited remarkable resilience during his recovery. The community's efforts to support him during his healing reflected the affection and respect he garnered throughout his life. This challenging experience earned him the nickname "Sparky," a moniker that remained with him and symbolized his perseverance.
He now joins those who've passed on before him: "Pa Pa" Kerlin Keller, "Nana" Elizabeth Keller, Uncle CD Dill, Uncle Ves Grimes, Uncle Lloyd Keller, Aunt Bonnie Keller, and cousins Tyrone Whetton, and Clee Crumbly.
Clay's funeral service will be held on September 7, 2024, at 3:00 PM at True Hope Fellowship, located at 2580 S 17th Ave, Safford, AZ, 85546, followed by a burial at Safford Cemetery at 4:30 PM.
