Obituary

Nancy June Van Voorhis, a deeply loving and generous soul, passed away peacefully on June 20, 2026, in Safford, Arizona.

Born in Sedalia, Missouri, to Opal Amanda Butcher Winch and William Russell Winch, Nancy spent most of her childhood in Jerome, Idaho. After graduating from Jerome High School in 1962, she attended the Twin Falls Business School for a year. Seeking warmer climates—often mentioned to "get away from the cold"—she relocated to San Francisco, California, to attend the university. While living off campus on Polk Street, she met Donald Lee Conroy. They married in 1965, and Nancy began a career with the Southern Pacific Trucking Company. In 1969, they welcomed their daughter, Donnis Leigh.

In 1977, the family moved to Ukiah, California, to be near her in-laws. Nancy became an active part of the community, working for the Millview Water District for over a decade and assisting at several local restaurants.

A new chapter began in 1982 when she married Russell Van Voorhis. In 1992, Nancy moved to Safford, Arizona, where her sisters, and her mother later joined them. Nancy built a long, respected career with Farm Credit Services from 1992 until her retirement at age 71 in 2015.

Though Nancy faced persistent health challenges after moving to Safford, she never let them dim into her spirit or her generosity. Her life was defined by three words: loving, giving, and resilient. She was passionate about donating to numerous charitable causes and gave selflessly to her community.

Nancy’s faith was her ultimate anchor, and she lived daily by her favorite saying: "God is good always." She was a devoted member of the Safford Seventh-day Adventist Church, where she also served as the church treasurer.

Music was Nancy’s lifelong passion. She began playing the piano around the age of ten, and it remained a source of immense joy. Though her health limited her ability to play during her final year, her love for music never faded.

Nancy leaves behind a large, adoring family spanning several states. She is survived by her daughter, Donnis Leigh (Conroy) Williams; her brother, Billy Dale Winch of Nampa, Idaho; and her sisters, LueEvelyn Hughes and Barbara (Jay) Galloway, both of Safford, Arizona. Her legacy lives on through her beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, a soon-to-arrive another great-grandchild, and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends who she cherished their regular phone calls and letters.

In honor of Nancy, there will be a memorial service on Saturday, July 18, 2026, held at the Safford Seventh-day Adventist Church on 301 E. Main Street in Safford at 11:00 a.m.
