Obituary

Stephen Mark Salter, born June 11, 1963, in San Jose, California, passed away on June 30, 2026, in Safford, Arizona. His departure leaves an irreplaceable space in the lives of all who knew and loved him.

From his earliest years in San Jose, Stephen’s quick wit and ready sense of humor set him apart among friends and family. Those closest to him recall the laughter he so effortlessly inspired in every room—never at the expense of kindness, but always with a lighthearted, knowing spark. He was famously funny, undeniably smart, and clever in ways that caught others pleasantly off guard. His penchant for sarcasm was balanced by the warmth that radiated from his role as a cherished friend—someone who could be counted on to lend an ear, offer thoughtful advice, or lighten a heavy moment with a wry comment.

Yet, it was in his family that Stephen’s legacy shines brightest. He is lovingly survived by his daughters: Dixie (Kyron) Forsgren, Stephanie (Peter) Carrasco, Liesl (Jordon) Sheer, Melanie (Steven) Brown, and Taylor Salter; his son, Jason Salter; and 14 grandchildren, each of whom carry a piece of his humor, wisdom, and affection forward in their own unique ways. Stephen’s influence as a father and grandfather is evident in the deep bond his family shares and the many fond memories they will forever treasure. Every gathering was enriched by his presence—his storytelling, his gentle teasing, and his sincere expressions of pride and love for his children and grandchildren.

Stephen was also preceded in death by those he held dear: his father, Melvin Salter; his mother, Crique Bisson; and his brothers, Roy Winslow and Paul Mason. Their memories lived in his stories and were honored in the life he led—always mindful of family ties and the importance of holding loved ones close.

Throughout his life, Stephen remained a steadfast friend. He was the one people turned to, counted on, and celebrated with. His intelligence lent itself not only to playful banter but also to profound conversations about the world and the people he cared for most deeply. His good-natured sarcasm never left any doubt that behind every joke was a heart that cared immensely.

A public viewing will be held on July 10, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM at McDougal Caldwell Funerals & Cremation, located at 112 E Main St, Safford, AZ 85546. The funeral service will follow at the same location from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM. Afterward, Stephen will be laid to rest at Safford Cemetery, 400 Discovery Park Boulevard, Safford, AZ 85546, from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM.

As those who loved Stephen gather to remember, they recall a man who approached every day with humor, intelligence, and loyalty. In honoring him, they honor a truly good friend—a father, grandfather, and companion whose impact will echo in their lives, and whose memory will continue to bring smiles even through tears.

He will be deeply missed, always remembered, and forever cherished.
