November 30, 1968 — May 15, 2025

Thatcher, Arizona

Valerie Kay Cooke, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away on May 15, 2025, in Thatcher, Arizona. She was born on November 30, 1968, in Silver City, New Mexico. Educated at Reserve High School in New Mexico, New Mexico Junior College in Hobbs where she played college basketball, and later at New Mexico State University, Valerie's journey through life was marked by her love for people and an enduring sense of humor. Her gentle wisdom and quiet strength guided many, and those who knew her treasured the caring nature she exuded.

Married to her cherished husband Scott Cooke on March 16, 1991, in Las Cruces, NM, Valerie nurtured a beautiful family that was always her first priority. She was the proud mother of four children: Brandon (wife Rylie), Danica, Shane, and Chesney Cooke, and reveled in her role as grandmother to her grandchildren, Kayce and Dean Cooke. The joy of her children's accomplishments and the laughter of her grandchildren filled her heart with pride, and these moments were among her proudest.

Valerie had a zest for life that was evident in her many hobbies and interests. Early on, she found joy playing college basketball and fighting wildand fire on a hotshot crew. Later, she found the same joy in watching her children take similar paths. Throughout her life, she found beauty in creativity, whether in her beloved garden, surrounded by flowers, or immersing herself in the joys of scrapbooking and crafts. She also cherished her time decorating for the seasons and special occasions, which brought her joy and added to the warmth of her inviting home.

Her connections ran deep, notably with her brother, Willie Joe Kelly. Valerie's captivating personality made her a treasured presence in the lives of many, as she touched the hearts of everyone she encountered.

A dedicated professional, Valerie served as the Chief Deputy Assessor for Graham County, Arizona, a role in which she combined her personal attributes of thoughtfulness and compassion with her unwavering commitment to her community.

Valerie's memorial service will be held on May 31, 2025, at 1:00 P.M., at True Hope Fellowship in Safford, AZ, where family and friends are invited to come together to celebrate her remarkable life.

She leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and humor—qualities that will continue to inspire all who knew her. Though her departure leaves a profound sense of loss, her spirit will forever remain intertwined with the lives she cherished.
